Become a technology advisor for the library!

Krueger Library is doing great things with technology. We’re redesigning our website, looking at library spaces, and constantly updating resources and instruction to improve the library experience. We would like you to be a part of this.

So we're creating a library technology student advisory group. Some things this group may do are: provide insight on current library website use, take part in user testing of various iterations of the new website, test out new hardware, and generally communicate student hopes, dreams, desires, and frustrations about library technology.

The group will meet about once a month starting Spring 2014, but will also exist as a list of members who are willing to complete questionnaires, test out equipment or websites, or even develop library software or apps. Membership from across the student spectrum is welcome, and you definitely don't have to be a "techie" to give your opinion! Students may be as involved as they wish, and are encouraged to help shape the future of the group.

To sign up for the library technology student advisory group, go to http://tinyurl.com/wsultsag.  For more information, email Librarian Tammi Owens, towens@winona.edu. Faculty and staff who are interested in providing similar feedback should contact Tammi Owens directly.

10/02 - Athenaeum at 1pm -Super Bodies and Secret Skins by Scott Daniel Boras

Please join us this Wednesday, October 2 at 1:00pm for an Athenaeum titled Super Bodies and Secret Skins presented by Scott Daniel Boras, Communication Studies.

This presentation will examine the influential relationships between depictions of popular culture superheroes and the substantive, malleable, and real possibilities of human body transformation. Cultural discourses condition and constrain the ways in which bodies/identity are formed and expressed. This includes popular culture texts that, through their evocative narratives, provide guidance or solutions for dealing with real world problems. The presentation involves examining ways people project and perform fantastic future versions of humanity, but also examines how such projections are borne out of (and get expressed through) our everyday, less than super experiences. Is it possible that we are becoming superheroes?

We hope you will encourage your students and colleagues to attend this Wednesday.  The Athenaeum is located on the south end of the Library's second floor.

Happy 449th Birthday, William Shakespeare!

William Shakespeare, English poet and playwright, was baptized on April 26, 1564 in Stratford upon Avon. The exact date of his birth is unknown. According to Peter Holland, William Shakespeare "was probably born on the 21, 22, or 23 April 1564." (939) Holland further explains that,

"...ever since Joseph Greene, an eighteenth-century Stratford curate, informed the scholar George Steevens that Shakespeare was born on 23 April, with no apparent evidence for his assertion, and Steevens adopted that date in his 1773 edition of Shakespeare, it has been usual to assume that Shakespeare was born on St. George's day, so that England's patron saint and the birth of the 'national poet' can be celebrated on the same day." (939).

Browse the Krueger Library's Main Collection (2nd floor) for works by and about William Shakespeare, and browse the library's Audiovisual Collection (1st floor) for dramatizations or adaptations (DVDs and VHS recordings) of Shakespeare's plays. Start your browsing with call numbers that begin with PR2750. Or, search in the library's catalog, for "Shakespeare, William" or a specific title.

02/27 - Athenaeum at 1pm - The Exploitation of Disability in Dramatic Works: From Shakespeare to Seinfeld

Please join us at 1:00pm on Wednesday, February 27, for "The Exploitation of Disability in Dramatic Works: From Shakespeare to Seinfeld" presented by Daniel S. Skoglund, a graduate student in the Department of English.

The topic of Disability Studies has garnered recent attention from numerous academic fields. In the study of English literature, with a particular focus on dramatic works, critics have attempted to assess the way in which dramatists have employed disability within these texts. Generally, disability is only utilized as a character-making trope that is intended to elicit humor, pity, and fear. This discussion attempts to assess how such works manage to induce these emotions as well as trace their presence from the medieval and early modern dramatic works of writers like Shakespeare, to their presence in postmodern works like Seinfeld.

The Library Athenaeum is free and open to the public. The Athenaeum is located on the second floor of the Krueger Library, bluff side. For more information about the fall Athenaeum events please visit: http://www.winona.edu/library/athenaeum/

01/30 Athenaeum at 1pm - What Do We Mean By "Liberal Arts"? by Dean Ralph Townsend

Please join us for our first Library Athenaeum of the spring 2013 semester.  Ralph Townsend, the WSU Dean of the College of Liberal Arts will present on the topic of What Do We Mean By "Liberal Arts"?
There are widely divergent concepts of what a “liberal arts” degree should mean, and, in particular, how a liberal arts degree should be structured in the first two years of education. (Note that the broad concept of "liberal arts", which includes the sciences and math, is implied here.) For WSU, the general education requirements for liberal arts majors are exactly the same as any other major. By comparison, private liberal arts colleges often have much elaborate distribution requirements and the expectations on writing are notably greater. This presentation discusses the nature of the differences in the definition of “liberal arts” and what are some of the drivers of these differences. It also discusses the question of whether WSU can or should aspire to a different definition of “liberal arts education.”
