The Krueger Library will closed for Thanksgiving and has different hours during this week.

10/27 - Books & DVDs to give you a chill

Halloween and winter are fast approaching. If you happen to be in the Krueger Library you may want to stop by the Halloween book display near the Information Gallery computer area.
There are DVDs which will definitely give you a jolt.  Also books such as The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson -considered to be one of the best literary ghost stories published during the 20th century and a finalist for the National Book Award. Edgar Allan Poe (of course), H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Ghosts on college campusus (and in Winona!), and film and literary criticism.

And lastly share with us who or what you are going as for Halloween. 

10/23 - Athenaeum at 1pm - Industry-Driven Research Projects for Students by Beckry Abdel-Magid

Join us this Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 1:00pm for our last Athenaeum of the fall semester.  We hope you will join us in learning about  Industry-Driven Research Projects for Students presented by Beckry Abdel-Magid, Professor, Composite Materials Engineering.

This presentation will discuss a number of research projects which were initiated through direct interaction with local and regional companies. The projects focused on research that will benefit an entire industry in the region rather than specific companies. A number of students in the engineering department were involved in these projects, and they shared their results with scientists and engineers from various companies in the region. The projects were funded by WSU Next Chapter Grant. The experience of developing such projects that allow students to work on practical problems, and put them in direct contact with professional in the field will be shared with faculty, staff and students.

Please encourage your students and come out to support a colleague!  The Library Athenaeum is located on the second floor of the Library, south side.

10/16 - Athenaeum at 1pm - Navajo Oral History Project by Tom Grier

Navajo Oral History Project

Join us this Wednesday October 16 at 1:00pm for our Athenaeum on the Navajo Oral History Project, presented by Tom Grier, Associate Professor, Mass Communication.

Summer 2013 marks the fifth year of the Navajo Oral History project; a collaboration between Winona State University and Diné College of the Navajo Nation. WSU and DC students in teams do a service project for a Navajo elder, then research, interview, photograph, write and edit documentaries about the elder. The documentaries are archived at the Navajo Nation Museum and Library, in the Diné College and Winona State University libraries and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian. Students gain experience while creating respectful historically accurate documentaries.

This presentation highlights goals and processes, and will show student videos.

10/02 - Athenaeum at 1pm -Super Bodies and Secret Skins by Scott Daniel Boras

Please join us this Wednesday, October 2 at 1:00pm for an Athenaeum titled Super Bodies and Secret Skins presented by Scott Daniel Boras, Communication Studies.

This presentation will examine the influential relationships between depictions of popular culture superheroes and the substantive, malleable, and real possibilities of human body transformation. Cultural discourses condition and constrain the ways in which bodies/identity are formed and expressed. This includes popular culture texts that, through their evocative narratives, provide guidance or solutions for dealing with real world problems. The presentation involves examining ways people project and perform fantastic future versions of humanity, but also examines how such projections are borne out of (and get expressed through) our everyday, less than super experiences. Is it possible that we are becoming superheroes?

We hope you will encourage your students and colleagues to attend this Wednesday.  The Athenaeum is located on the south end of the Library's second floor.
