12/16 - A Virus Attacked the Library's Homepage

This morning a new virus attacked parts of the WSU network. This virus was only added to the Microsoft anti-virus software profile today. The library’s main page crashed and there has been difficulty in restoring it. In the meantime, a text-only version of the library's homepage has been uploaded so that our patrons can continue to access the library's resources.

Thank you for your patience. We hope the library's homepage will be restored soon.

Update: A virus did not attack the library's homepage. There was a problem with the virus definitions in the virus software, which defined the library's homepage as a virus. The problem has been corrected. Thank you for your patience.

11/17 - Athenaeum at 1pm - Jobs in the XXI Century: The importance of being earnest about cultural competency by Juan Fernández Iglesias

Please join us on Wednesday, November 17, at 1:00pm for "Jobs in the XXI Century: The importance of being earnest about cultural competency” presented by Juan Fernández Iglesias.

In an increasingly interconnected world, the importance of a global perspective in a students’ curriculum has become an integral part of a Liberal Arts education. This global awareness is, in many cases, already reflected in the mission and vision of public universities, since many employers, from the fields of Criminal Justice to Nursing, Engineering and Business, to name a few, demand and place a premium in the ability of their prospective employees to navigate cultural differences. However, increasing budget constraints, demands on bigger class sizes and the elimination of electives, together with a general lack of awareness of the importance of world cultures for future job prospects, mean that less than 5% of students include world languages and cultures as part of their curriculum. Professor Fernández Iglesias will describe these competing realities and offer some solutions on how to solve this dilemma, so that the study of world cultures can become a powerful tool to enhance students' majors, and, therefore, their job prospect in a global world.

10/27-Athenaeum-Using GigaPan High-Resolution Photography to Bring Virtual Field Experiences to the Classroom Lee Beatty & Candace Kairies Beatty

On October 27th Lee Beatty and Candace Kairies Beatty will present on "Using GigaPan High-Resolution Photography to Bring Virtual Field Experiences to the Classroom."

Lee Beatty, Assistant professor, Geoscience Department
Candace Kairies Beatty, Assistant professor, Geoscience Department

Field experiences are an important part of undergraduate education in the geosciences, but students’ field experiences are often limited by their geographic location, funding availability, etc. Using a GigaPan robotic camera mount to capture high-resolution panoramic images, we can provide a virtual field experience similar to actual fieldwork and give students opportunities to hone techniques, such as rock identification and mapping, that are usually associated with work in the field. This approach differs from the concept of a virtual field trip in that students are actively collecting and analyzing data rather than simply sightseeing online. During this presentation there will be a demonstration of the GigaPan robot, a discussion of how high-resolution panoramic images can be used in the classroom as well as a discussion of how the applications of the GigaPan technology are used in other areas.

Join us on Wednesday October 20th at 1pm for a presentation by James Reidy titled "How the Connected Community Paves the Road to Sustainability? An Earth Way Perspective."

James Reidy is an Associate Professor of Recreation, Tourism and Therapeutic Recreation (RTTR). He will speak about: the best path to sustainability is through our understanding and practice of a connected community. If, as a community, we examine the historical and economic conflict between the people of the First Nation and the European nation, we will be better equipped to pave a solid path to enhanced sustainability and secure a future for our children. During this presentation Professor Reidy will weave the audience through a tapestry of teachings, quotes, and songs from several tribes, which could be incorporated into a daily discipline in order to sustain the biotic and abiotic community.

The Athenaeum is located on the second floor of the WSU Krueger Library, bluff side.

10/13 - Athenaeum at 1pm - The Cycle of Love in Edna St. Vincent Millay’s Fatal Interview by Gabe Dybing

Please join us on Wednesday, October 13, at 1:00pm for " The Cycle of Love in Edna St. Vincent Millay’s Fatal Interview” presented by Gabe Dybing.

In the midst of the Modernist literary movement, Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) resisted poetic trends by continuing to work with outmoded “fixed forms,” most prominently with the sonnet. In one of her most famous sequences, Fatal Interview (1931), Millay subverts what had once been considered a “masculine” form, thereby redefining what it means to love, lust, and lose in the early twentieth century. Dybing will lecture and share poems particularly demonstrative of Millay’s restructuring methods.

10/06 - Athenaeum at 1pm - Siblings and Autism: Stories Spanning Generations and Cultures by Debra Cumberland

Please join us on Wednesday, October 6, at 1:00pm for "Siblings and Autism: Stories Spanning Generations and Cultures” presented by Debra Cumberland.

In recent decades, we have seen an extraordinary number of parent books, a mother or father driven to encompass the reality of autism in words: Clara Claiborne Parks’s Exiting Nirvana, Richard Grinker’s Unstrange Minds, Susan Senator’s Making Peace with Autism, and many, many more. From autobiographical “how-to” perspectives meant to teach interventions and thus “recover” a child to revelations into the hard realities and unique features of a different way of knowing, these books and others discern the landscape of autism as seen through the intimate lens of a parent. In all the various renderings of the life of autism, however, one voice is consistently missing or spoken from the margins: the sibling point of view. Professor Cumberland will talk about her experiences publishing an anthology that gave voice to the sibling experience, and what she learned in the process.

Over the past few years several new remotely sensed data sets have become available for southeastern Minnesota. These include very high-resolution color aerial photos, Pictometry, which allows all portions of the landscape to be viewed from at least four oblique angles and high-resolution digital elevation models that allow the landscape to be visualized in three dimensions. During this presentation Professor Dogwiler will introduce the audience these technology as well as LiDar and other high-resolution digital elevation models, show examples from the southeastern Minnesota data, and discuss how these data sets are helping to address natural resources issues from the local farm all the way to the Gulf of Mexico dead zone.

3/3 - Athenaeum at 1pm- Russell T. Davies’s Doctor Who: Myth for the Twenty-First Century by Gabe Dybing

Join us on March 3, 2010 at 1pm for a presentation by Gabe Dybing titled Russell T. Davies’s Doctor Who: Myth for the Twenty-first Century

Through his reinvention of the popular science fiction serial for the BBC, Doctor Who, writer and producer Russell T. Davies has proposed one of the new “myths” for the twenty-first century. This “grand narrative,” based on reason and focused on the now-fractured British Empire, assimilates and paradoxically validates belief systems that are more mythic or intuitive in nature. While working in many genres at once, Doctor Who repackages and re-presents content from spiritualist perspectives with “rational” explanations for those invested in dominant worldviews.

The Athenaeum is located on the second floor of the Krueger Library, bluff side.

2/ 24 Athenaeum at 1pm - Micro Fiction Gets Big: Why “1,000 words or less” is all the rage - by Nicholas Ozment

Join us on Wednesday February 24 at 1pm for a presentation by Nicholas Ozment of the WSU English Department.

Nicholas Ozment will give a brief history/overview of micro fiction and define the various types —“flash,” “sudden,” “hint” etc. His presentation will conclude with possible explanations for why the form has become so popular in the last decade. The “performance” part of the presentation will be the actual reading of examples (for instance, Hemingway’s story that was six words long).

The Library Athenaeum is located on the second floor of the Krueger Library, bluff side.

2/17 - Athenaeum at 1pm - WSU's New Approach to Web Communications

On Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 1pm on the second floor of the WSU Library, Cristeen Custer and Robin Honken will present, “WSU's New Approach to Web Communications."

Custer and Honken will discuss the complex process involved in redesigning the WSU website. This process included a needs analysis, intensive research and testing, a design and development process which resulted in the launch of a new WSU website.

Custer and Honken believe that this major undertaking has presented a new collaborative model for the University, which involved a realignment of resources and responsibilities. This collaborative model will continue now to further develop and maintain our new site.

The University has reconfigured its approach to web communications, and in the future will be moving towards Web 2.0 technologies, as well as embrace social networking as a method of communication and marketing.

The Library Athenaeum is located on the second floor, bluff side of the Darrell W. Krueger Library. For the complete Spring 2010 Library Athenaeum schedule, please visit the following: http://www.winona.edu/library/athenaeum/

Please encourage your students, friends, and colleagues to attend. Thank you.

2/3 - Athenaeum at 1pm - From Basic Skills to Writing in the Disciplines: Case Studies of Student Writers

On February 3, 2010 at 1pm on the second floor of the WSU Library Professors Krase and Johnson will present From Basic Skills to Writing in the Disciplines: Case Studies of Student Writers.

Ethan Krase - Associate Professor, English Department
J Paul Johnson - Professor, English Department

Faculty, administration, and students generally agree that it is important for students to gain the ability to write effectively as part of their undergraduate education. However, while many of us can cite anecdotal evidence of the ways some students go about becoming better writers, it is often difficult to gain a comprehensive picture of the role WSU writing curricula play in students’ writing development.

This study employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative research to examine the ways that graduating seniors have transitioned from basic-skills to discipline-specific writing projects at WSU. Using results of the 2005-2006 University Studies Basic Skills: College Reading and Writing Assessment project as baseline data, in the spring of 2009 the presenters conducted case studies of twelve graduating seniors who had participated in the 2005-2006 study. The study charts those students’ writing instruction and experience as they completed their major course of study. Specific areas of inquiry include comparisons of students’ writing coursework, type and amount of feedback on writing, practices and attitudes towards writing, and assessment measures.
