9/10 - Library Boot Camp for 1st Yr. Students - Chance to Win Prizes


First Year Students - 

The Library Boot Camp will not only help you learn more about the Krueger Library, but also, if you complete all of the challenges, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a $50, $25, or $15 iTunes gift card. 

Here's what you'll need to do:
  1. Download two free apps: SCVNGR and a QR reader on your iPad mini. 
  2. Then work through the Krueger Library Boot Camp challenges.   
  3. Once all of the challenges are completed, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a $50, $25, or $15 iTunes gift card.
  4. Complete all 9 challenges (at your own pace) by Oct. 15 to eligible for the drawing.

12/15 - Migration to the New ProQuest Interface

Over the winter break the library will be switching several databases to a new ProQuest interface. The new ProQuest interface also merges the old CSA Illumina databases with the old ProQuest databases. The new interface offers additional features such as searching multiple databases more easily and selecting facets from the results.

9/7 - Athenaeum at 1pm - Improving Assessment Efforts to Evaluate the Digital Life and Learning Program

Please join us on Wednesday, September 7, at 1pm for "Improving Assessment Efforts to Evaluate the Digital Life and Learning Program" presented by Kenneth Janz, Ken Graetz, and and James Reineke.

Since implementing its one-to-one laptop program in 1997, Winona State University has been a living, mobile computing laboratory; however, gaps in our assessment strategy emerged, requiring a more comprehensive approach. Working with students and faculty, a plan was developed and implemented in the fall of 2010. The plan has all ready resulted in improvements to student and faculty support as well as a better understanding of how technology facilitates teaching and learning. Data collected to date and lessons learned will be presented and discussed.

4/13 - Athenaeum at 1pm - A History of Murder and Exile in a Poetry Format

Join us on Wednesday, April 13, at 1pm for the last Athenaeum of the Spring 2011 semester, "A History of Murder and Exile in a Poetry Format" presented by Nancy Kay Peterson

Nancy Kay Peterson will read her poetry as well as discuss the process of creating a poetry chapbook that tells a historical narrative. Nancy Kay Peterson's chapbook, published by Finishing Line Press, tells the story of her great-great uncle Arne Kulterstad (1825-1902) through the voices of different characters. He was convicted of murder in Valdres, Norway and sentenced to death. An editorial campaign by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson saved his life. He was imprisoned, eventually pardoned and exiled to America to settle near relatives in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. Ms. Peterson will describe how she discovered the story, conducted the research and created the chapbook.

4/14 - Athenaeum - Beyond the Confines of This World: A Brief Journey to Antarctica by Drake Hokanson and Carol Kratz

On Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 1pm, Drake Hokanson and Carol Kratz will present, "Beyond the Confines of This World: A Brief Journey to Antarctica."

Join travelers and authors Drake Hokanson and Carol Kratz on an eco-tour to the tip of the seventh continent­-visit penguin colonies for sure, but also volcanoes, a Brazilian research base, an abandoned whaling station, and witness some really bad weather. What don't the nature documentaries show you? How is tourism affecting this place? What's it actually like to be there? How can you go?

Please join us on Wednesday March 31, 2010 at 1pm for a presentation titled "Seeing in Pictures" by James Bowey, Assistant Professor, Mass Communication Department

Professor Bowey will explore the fascinating ways that photography and the visual arts affect the way we see and think. Drawing on his experience as a photojournalist, editor and teacher, Professor Bowey will explain the compelling power of images and image-making to give meaning to our lives and the world around us.

On Wednesday March 24 at 1:00pm join us for a lecture performance by Deanne Mohr, Associate Professor-Music, titled Isn’t it Romantic: An Introduction to Piano Music of the 19th Century.

It's a lecture performance presenting an introduction to music of the Romantic period, highlighting piano works of Chopin in celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth.

3/17 - Athenaeum at 1pm - The Papers of John Kennedy Toole by Vernon Leighton

Join us on March 17, 2010 at 1pm for a presentation by Vernon Leighton titled "The Papers of John Kennedy Toole."

In the Summer of 2009, Vernon Leighton visited Tulane University and studied the papers of John Kennedy Toole, the author of A Confederacy of Dunces. While he is working on an academic paper on this topic, Professor Leighton would like to present some of the findings. The papers, about which no scholar has published a description, prove incorrect at least two claims made in the scholarly literature on Toole.

2/ 24 Athenaeum at 1pm - Micro Fiction Gets Big: Why “1,000 words or less” is all the rage - by Nicholas Ozment

Join us on Wednesday February 24 at 1pm for a presentation by Nicholas Ozment of the WSU English Department.

Nicholas Ozment will give a brief history/overview of micro fiction and define the various types —“flash,” “sudden,” “hint” etc. His presentation will conclude with possible explanations for why the form has become so popular in the last decade. The “performance” part of the presentation will be the actual reading of examples (for instance, Hemingway’s story that was six words long).
