09/25 - Athenaeum at 1pm - A Researcher’s Travel to Havana, Cuba

Join us today at 1:00pm for A Researcher’s Travel to Havana, Cuba presented by Suzanne Draayer, Professor, Music.

Professor Draayer traveled to La Habana, Cuba in March 2012 to conduct research on Cuban art song composers and their music. The difficulty and challenges of the trip—the acquisition of a researcher’s license from OFAC, visas restrictions, finding a host, etc.—will be presented, as well as the success of my journey.

After visiting with musicologists at the Museo Nacional de la Música, Professor Draayer was able to return with several scores and books on Cuban art music, which were donated to the Darrell Krueger Library. An article will appear in Journal of Singing.

Join us on March 16, 2011 at 1:00pm for our Library Athenaeum titles The Beatles and the Rediscovery of America presented by Paul Vance, Professor, Music Department.

The arrival of the Beatles in America in February, 1964 has often been called “The British Invasion”. This presentation will investigate the ways in which The Beatles and their music helped America recover from a National tragedy and revitalize the American art of rock and roll.

3/24 -Athenaeum at 1pm- Isn’t it Romantic: An Introduction to Piano Music of the 19th Century by Deanne Mohr

On Wednesday March 24 at 1:00pm join us for a lecture performance by Deanne Mohr, Associate Professor-Music, titled Isn’t it Romantic: An Introduction to Piano Music of the 19th Century.

It's a lecture performance presenting an introduction to music of the Romantic period, highlighting piano works of Chopin in celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth.

This event free and open to the public. The Athenaeum is located on the second floor of the Krueger Library, bluff side.

1/28 Athenaeum at 1pm- Paul Vance presents Benjamin Britten, His Three Suites for Cello, and the Conflict Between the Individual and Society

Join us at the first Athenaeum for the spring 2009 semester. Professor of Music, Paul Vance, will discuss and perform excerpts from Britten’s Three Suites and attempt to explain their musical and sociological themes.

4/9 Athenaeum at 1pm - The Compositional Process -- Libby Larsen

Join us in the PAC Recital Hall this Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 1:00pm for an Athenaeum presentation about The Compositional Process by Libby Larsen. NOTE: Location is the Recital Hall, PAC.

Libby Larsen is "one of America's most performed living composers. She is a created a catalogue of over 220 works spanning virtually every genre from intimate vocal and chamber music to massive orchestral and choral scores." Her work is Grammy award winning and widely recorded, including over 50 CDs. Ms. Larsen will describe the compositional process especially as it applies to the piece she is writing for the Winona Symphony Orchestra for performance on April 18, 2008.
