9/1 - A Month of Birds: A Library Exhibit of Audubon's Reproduction Prints

During the month of September, as a precursor to the 2010 CLASP lecture series, The Big Sky, the Darrell W. Krueger Library will display reproduction prints of John James Audubon's The Birds of North America. Audubon’s The Birds of North America is considered the most important ornithological publication in the United States. It was published between 1827 and 1838 as 435 hand-colored double elephant folio sheets (39 inches by 26 inches). WSU is fortunate to own a complete full-sized reproduction, which was published in Amsterdam in 1971. Of the 250 reproduction editions, only 119 sets of the original exist. The Darrell W. Krueger Library owns the copy numbered 165. This public display is the first of WSU’s prints. Each day the library will select either a resident bird of Minnesota or a bird that includes Minnesota in their migratory path.
