11/17 - Athenaeum at 1pm - Jobs in the XXI Century: The importance of being earnest about cultural competency by Juan Fernández Iglesias

Please join us on Wednesday, November 17, at 1:00pm for "Jobs in the XXI Century: The importance of being earnest about cultural competency” presented by Juan Fernández Iglesias.

In an increasingly interconnected world, the importance of a global perspective in a students’ curriculum has become an integral part of a Liberal Arts education. This global awareness is, in many cases, already reflected in the mission and vision of public universities, since many employers, from the fields of Criminal Justice to Nursing, Engineering and Business, to name a few, demand and place a premium in the ability of their prospective employees to navigate cultural differences. However, increasing budget constraints, demands on bigger class sizes and the elimination of electives, together with a general lack of awareness of the importance of world cultures for future job prospects, mean that less than 5% of students include world languages and cultures as part of their curriculum. Professor Fernández Iglesias will describe these competing realities and offer some solutions on how to solve this dilemma, so that the study of world cultures can become a powerful tool to enhance students' majors, and, therefore, their job prospect in a global world.

The Library Athenaeum is located on the second floor, bluff side of the Darrell W. Krueger Library. For more information about the Library Athenaeum, please visit the following: http://www.winona.edu/library/athenaeum/
