Online Library Resource/Database Access Errors

In the past couple weeks, the campus community has had increasing difficulty accessing the library’s resources. When accessing the library’s resources, specifically the library’s databases, a web page may appear that states “browser cannot access this page”. This access problem has occurred both on and off campus, and is not limited to only accessing the databases, but also when attempting to accessing the full-text of an article.

What’s being done: Campus IT is investigating, but they have not been able to pinpoint the problem, since these access problems seem to be sporadic and not directly linked to one type of internet browser, type of computer, on/campus, or library resource, so the library has created a form for people to report their access problems. This form can be found on the library’s databases page: http://www.winona.edu/library/databases/

Reporting (help us and IT figure out the problem): Here is a direct link to the form titled “Report an Access Problem”, this link can be found above the columns of Databases by Subject: http://www.winona.edu/library/help/cannotaccessproblem.html

Troubleshooting: When I’ve experienced these access problems, I try the following:
• Refresh the web page,
• Click on the back button,
• Closed the browser window, or tried again after some time has passed.

If you’re having access problems while in a database, write down what you have searched or the article citations, so that you can replicate the search later or search for the article(s).

Please inform your students about this form, the above suggestions, and that Campus IT is investigating the cause of these access problems.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We hope to have this resolved soon.

9/26 Athenaeum at 1pm - Studio Art Glass Movement

Athenaeum, Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 1:00pm

Please join us on Wednesday, September , at 1pm for the Library Athenaeum titled: Studio Art Glass Movement.

Cathy and Steve Richardson will discuss "the art of blown class was a semi-moribund until the 1960s, when it went through a revival that continues today. Modern glass artists use an array of tools, techniques, and glass formulas that have been either developed or re-invented over the past 40 years. The result has been a dramatic rise in the popularity of glass both in large public installations (Dale Chihuly) and in functional and decorative sculpture. Steve and Cathy will show examples of different styles of finished work as well as descriptions and photos of the blowing process --some of which is done here at their Winona Studio." --SR

Possible Disruption with Interlibrary Loan Service

Strike at University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus and MINITEX Services

The University of Minnesota announced that on August 24, 2007, three AFSCME locals delivered a notice of intent to strike to the University. The strike will begin Wednesday, September 5, 2007. This potential situation could affect some of the MINITEX staff, who are AFSCME – represented staff – the Document Delivery and Delivery areas would be the most affected. There could be delays in some services provided by MINITEX during this period, such as Interlibrary Loan.

MINITEX will continue to provide services during this period, and staff are being re-directed to assist with the Document Delivery and Delivery units in order to process interlibrary loan requests.

This situation is being covered by the media and reports are appearing in the Twin Cities newspapers.
